# Bingbot

> Bingbot is Microsoft's web crawler that builds the Bing search index. It matters for AI visibility because Bing's index also backs Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT search, so a page Bingbot cannot reach can be missing from those AI answers too.

Bingbot identifies with the user agent `bingbot/2.0` and respects `robots.txt`. It powers classic Bing results, but its reach extends further than search: when ChatGPT or Copilot retrieve live web results, they lean on Bing's index.

That makes Bingbot reachability a quiet prerequisite for some AI surfaces. Blocking it, or catching it in an overly broad bot rule, can remove you from Bing and from the AI answers built on Bing's index.
