AI Mode goes further than AI Overviews. Instead of summarizing above the blue links, it replaces the results page with a generated, multi-turn answer you can keep questioning, more like a chat than a search. Behind the scenes it leans on query fan-out, breaking your question into many related searches at once, then using Gemini to reason over what comes back and assemble one answer with a handful of cited links.
The scale is no longer experimental. Google said at I/O in May 2026 that AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users within a year of launch, and it is free and broadly rolled out rather than the US-only, opt-in Labs feature it started as. It shares Google's index with classic Search and AI Overviews but selects and presents sources differently, which is why it is treated as its own surface.
For visibility the implication is the same as the rest of GEO: being reachable to Google's crawlers, being the clearest extractable answer to the sub-questions fan-out generates, and being corroborated across trusted sources matter more than a single #1 ranking.
