Reddit SEO can work, but treat it as a channel you rent. Threads that mention your brand can rank in Google and get pulled into AI answers, and as ChatGPT's citations showed this August, one engine's credit can drop sharply within days while others move more slowly.
The version worth doing is honest participation under each community's rules, measured on your own prompts rather than anyone's average. It costs time instead of money, and it breaks the moment you treat it as a link-building shortcut.
What Is Reddit SEO?
Reddit SEO is the practice of making Reddit work as a search channel. It has two jobs: getting threads that mention you to rank in Google, and getting those threads (and your contributions inside them) retrieved and cited by AI answers.
It is participation, not link building. That distinction decides most of what follows, because Reddit's rules and moderators work against the tactics SEOs usually reach for first.
Both jobs start the same way. Someone asks a question, a thread already holds a useful answer, and a search engine or an AI system surfaces that thread, though ranking, retrieval and citation are separate steps. The version worth pursuing is one where a real person mentioned your brand there, for a reason other members found credible.
Links are the weak part of the plan. Google's own guidance is to mark user-generated links with rel="ugc", and Reddit marks outbound links nofollow ugc (we saw it on a link post in an October 2025 archive; live threads would not load), so treat a link in a comment as passing no equity to your site. Do not count on the link for ranking credit; Google treats these attributes as hints, and the value comes from being present in the conversation and from readers who click. We cover what that value looks like below.
If you want the broader picture of how being visible in AI answers is defined and measured, start with what AI visibility is. Reddit is one input to it, and as the next sections show, an unstable one.
Why Reddit Shows Up in Google and AI Answers
Reddit's visibility is partly structural. In February 2024, Reddit announced an expanded partnership with Google that gave Google programmatic access to public posts and comments through Reddit's Data API, so Reddit content could be displayed across Google products. That arrangement is not fixed. In July 2026 the Wall Street Journal reported, as covered by CNBC, that the $60 million-a-year deal was ending soon and the companies were in talks about renewing it, after Reddit had discussed shutting off Google's access to its content for AI use.
The AI side is less structural and more measurable. In a study covering 217,000 prompts and 248,000 Reddit URLs, Semrush found Reddit was the No. 1 cited domain on Perplexity, No. 2 on ChatGPT Search and No. 3 on Google AI Mode. Semrush said it refreshed that data in October 2025, after the September volatility in AI citation trends, and that Reddit stayed among the top-cited sources on all three platforms.
You can see the Google side directly. In our own check of Google's results for "reddit seo" on September 29, 2026 (via DataForSEO), a "What people are saying" block sat below the organic results, mixing Reddit threads with YouTube and LinkedIn posts, and the AI Overview cited a subreddit. Google's results vary between pulls, so treat that as an example, not a constant. Thread titles are often phrased as questions, so they line up with long-tail queries, and Google's AI features draw on them too; our guide to getting cited in Google AI Overviews covers that surface.
Those AI-engine rankings sit on very different shares. Read the table before you quote any of them.
| Source | Window | Reddit's reported share | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semrush, 217,000 prompts | Data refreshed October 2025 | 13% ChatGPT Search, 9% Google AI Mode, 4% Perplexity | Semrush's reported share in its prompt set (its text also describes these as the share of responses linking to Reddit). Ranks No. 2, No. 3 and No. 1 respectively. |
| Promptwatch, via Axios | September 2025 | 3.2% (most-cited social network; LinkedIn 0.3%) | From Promptwatch's social-platform comparison, a different question from the other rows. Do not compare it with them. |
| Promptwatch, via Search Engine Journal | July 18 to August 7, 2026 | 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations | One tracking vendor's prompts, ChatGPT Search only. |
The figures differ widely, most likely because they measure different things on different prompts and engines: Semrush reports how often Reddit appears in its prompt set, while Promptwatch reports Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations. Nobody is wrong, and the rows are not comparable. Never chain them into one trend line. A "share of citations" and a "rank among domains" answer different questions.
One more distinction matters for everything after this. Being retrieved and being cited are different events, and Trackerly's data suggests ChatGPT kept retrieving Reddit at a steady rate while citing it far less. Our breakdown of how ChatGPT decides what to cite covers that gap, and Perplexity SEO covers the engine where Semrush ranked Reddit the top cited domain, and the caveat that Reddit sued Perplexity in October 2025 over scraped user posts.
What Changed in 2026
Reddit's share of ChatGPT Search citations dropped sharply in mid-August, and the cause is unconfirmed. Promptwatch reported that reddit.com averaged 3.83% of ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 to August 7, then 0.52% from August 14 to 17, an 86.4% relative drop. Promptwatch's first report called the size of the drop provisional and said it could not rule out a data-collection problem on its own end. Trackerly, another tracker, reported the same cliff in its own data.

The obvious suspect is a change on August 8. Promptwatch saw ChatGPT's background searches, the fan-out queries it runs while building an answer, start using the site: operator far more often, jumping from 0.37% to 16.8% of fan-out queries in a day. But Search Engine Journal pointed out that the timing does not line up cleanly: Reddit's share dipped on August 8 and only collapsed on August 14. The second drop is still unexplained. Trackerly noted that the timing also coincides with OpenAI changing ChatGPT's default model for Free and Go users, announced August 6, so a model change is another candidate.
The abrupt cliff was specific to ChatGPT. Semrush's write-up of the same data says Reddit's citation share also fell in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, by about 11% and 31%, but far less sharply.
Reddit's Google-side story is messier than a single line on a chart. After the March 2026 core update, Amsive's SISTRIX-based analysis listed Reddit among the visibility losers (down 64.2 SISTRIX visibility points), then said Google appeared to have reversed that trend for Reddit in the following weeks. A loss and a reversal inside one quarter is the pattern to plan around.
This has happened before. Search Engine Journal notes that in September 2025 several AI-visibility trackers reported Reddit's ChatGPT citation share collapsing, and that one analyst, Kevin Indig, suggested in hedged language that Google removing the num=100 search parameter was the likelier cause rather than any decision by OpenAI or Reddit. The explanation was never settled. Semrush's October 2025 refresh, mentioned above, followed that same volatility.
| Claim | Status | What we can say |
|---|---|---|
| Reddit's ChatGPT Search share fell 86.4% in mid-August 2026 | Trackers agree on direction | Promptwatch's data, reported by Search Engine Journal and Axios; Trackerly reports the same cliff in its own data. |
The site: operator change on August 8 caused it | Unconfirmed | Timing does not fully match; the August 14 drop is unexplained. |
| A similar drop happened in September 2025 | Reported | Multiple trackers reported it; one analyst suggested a Google parameter change. The cause was never settled. |
| Reddit lost visibility in Google's March 2026 core update | Reported, then reportedly reversed | Amsive's SISTRIX analysis shows a 64.2-point loss, and says Google appeared to reverse the trend in the following weeks. |
What About Reddit's Own AI Search?
Reddit also runs its own AI search. Reddit Answers began rolling out in December 2024 and, Reddit says, has since been merged into Reddit Search. Reddit describes it as summaries of Reddit conversations with links to related communities and posts, so it rewards what members say about you inside Reddit more than what your website says.
Does Reddit Actually Help SEO?
Reddit helps indirectly, and the size of the effect is not something anyone has pinned down. We have not run a controlled test of Reddit's effect on rankings or citations, so this section separates what the sources support from what is only claimed.
What the sources support. Links from Reddit should be treated as carrying no equity, as covered above. In the handful of practitioner threads we read on r/localseo, r/seogrowth and r/AskMarketing (as text through Reddit's RSS feeds, without vote counts), most commenters say the same: the value is indirect (a few say it does nothing for rankings). A thread that mentions you can rank for a long-tail question, people who see the mention may search your brand name, and AI systems may pull the thread into an answer.
What is only claimed. Vendor and agency posts routinely assert that Reddit drives rankings, traffic or citations without showing the before-and-after data. Treat those numbers the way you would treat any single-source stat.
The retrieval-versus-citation gap makes the picture harder to read. Trackerly reported that in the week Reddit's ChatGPT citations collapsed, between a quarter and a third of the pages ChatGPT consulted still came from Reddit. If that holds, Reddit threads can still shape an answer without being credited in it. Trackerly and Promptwatch both sell AI-visibility tracking, as we do, so treat their numbers as vendor data and hold them loosely. Still, it explains why falling citation share does not automatically mean falling influence: continued retrieval leaves open the chance of uncited influence.
Search Engine Journal and Axios point the same way on what to do. Search Engine Journal's advice was to check your own domain's citation trends before changing anything, since one vendor's average does not reflect your visibility. It added that the decision to use Reddit should come down to whether it makes sense for your brand, not whether it appears in ChatGPT citations. And Burson's Steve Rubel told Axios that brands should not pin their GEO hopes on one channel, because some channels go up and some go down. For where Reddit fits against the rest of your budget, see our SEO and GEO budget split guide.
How to Do Reddit SEO Without Getting Banned
The playbook is boring on purpose: find the questions your buyers already ask, answer them better than anyone else in the thread, and let the mention do the work. Everything below is built around staying inside the rules, because a banned account earns nothing.
Read Reddit's Rules and Each Subreddit's Rules First
Reddit's platform-wide rules are short. Rule 2 says to "Abide by community rules. Participate authentically in communities where you have a personal interest, and do not spam or engage in disruptive behaviors (including content manipulation) that interfere with Reddit communities." Rule 5 says to be authentic and not to "intentionally mislead others or impersonate an individual or entity in a deceptive manner." Reddit lists temporary or permanent account suspension among its enforcement options.
Notice what is missing: a posting ratio. Some SEO guides repeat a 90/10 rule, meaning nine helpful contributions for every promotional one. It is a folk norm, not Reddit policy. Day to day, the rules that remove your post are the ones each subreddit's moderators write, and they vary; Reddit itself can suspend accounts under its site-wide rules. One moderator removal notice we read on r/ChatGPTPro cites a "1/10th rule" capping promotion at 10% of a member's participation, which is that community's rule, not Reddit's.
Find the Threads That Already Rank, Then Answer Them
Start where the search demand already is. Search Google for the questions your buyers type, look at which Reddit threads appear, and read the top comments before writing anything. A thread that already ranks has shown it can be found; a brand-new post has no track record yet. Semrush's study also found that most cited Reddit posts have fewer than 20 upvotes, and that Q&A threads make up over half of cited Reddit content, so a modest thread with a good answer can earn a citation.
- Search your category queries in Google and note the Reddit threads on page one.
- Read the subreddit's rules and the top comments to see what answers are welcome, and whether replies are still open.
- Write an answer that is complete without your product: specifics, trade-offs, what you would do.
- Mention your product only where it is a real option, and say who you are.
- Come back to answer follow-up questions.
Write comments as self-contained answers. A reply that only makes sense in the context of the comment above it is hard for anyone to reuse. Adding a comment does not guarantee it will be retrieved or cited.
A Starter Plan for the First Week
Ross Simmonds' starter plan, as laid out by Sprout Social, is a workable template. First, map the conversations and use a site:reddit.com search to see which threads already rank. Next, choose the subreddits that fit your buyers' intent. Then read a batch of high-engagement threads to note the questions that keep coming up, publish a set of link-free comments, and only after that post a discussion thread in the best-fit subreddit, watching how it does over the following days.
We would add one condition: read each subreddit's rules at the second step, before you write anything.
Disclose, and Put the Link Last
Say when you work for the brand you are mentioning. Ross Simmonds' Reddit SEO guide makes the same point: if you share your own content, disclose it. Reddit's fifth rule already treats deceptive impersonation as a violation, and members are quick to spot an account that only ever mentions one company.
Lead with the answer and treat the link as optional. Since a comment link most likely carries nofollow ugc anyway, its job is to help a reader who wants more, not to pass authority.
Start Your Own Thread Only When It Serves the Community
A post of your own can work when it shares something members would want anyway: original data, a teardown, an honest question. It fails when it is an announcement dressed as a discussion. If you would not post it under your personal account with no company attached, do not post it.
Posting-time tricks and early-engagement tactics are all over the competitor guides. The evidence behind the loudest one is a single Reddit user's ten-day analysis of posts, so we leave it out rather than pass it along as a rule.
What Gets You Banned or Ignored
In the threads we read, most Reddit SEO failures are quiet removals, not dramatic bans. In the practitioner threads we read on r/localseo, r/NewToReddit, r/indiehackers and in moderator notices on r/ChatGPTPro, the same pattern repeats: accounts that lead with links get their posts removed by moderators or by AutoModerator, the subreddit-level filter moderators configure themselves. You will not always be told.
Three behaviors put an account at risk. The first is posting a link first from a fresh account, which reads as promotion and is often removed. The second is running an undisclosed brand account, since Reddit's fifth rule prohibits misleading others or impersonating an entity in a deceptive manner. The third is coordinated or automated activity: Reddit's second rule names content manipulation, and its User Agreement restricts automated use of the service that interferes with it.
We do not cover coordinated multi-account tactics, because the downside is a permanent ban and a public brand-safety problem. Shadowbans and hidden karma thresholds come up in several of these threads, but the reports are anecdotal and the thresholds vary by subreddit, so we will not print numbers for them.
The pressure on spam is real and coming from outside Reddit too. When Digg relaunched its beta in early 2026, it was swamped by AI agents and SEO spammers looking to exploit its Google link authority, according to Digg, and the company temporarily shut the beta down and cut jobs in March, which its CEO called a hard reset. Any platform that ranks well in Google attracts the same crowd.
How to Measure Reddit's Effect on AI Answers
Do not trust anyone's average. Search Engine Journal's advice on the August drop applies here: check your own domain's citation trends before changing anything. You can track how your visibility moves alongside your Reddit activity with your own prompts, repeated over time. That shows correlation, not proof: model changes, other marketing and random variation all move the same numbers.

Here is a method that needs no paid tool:
- Build a prompt set. Take the 10 to 20 questions your buyers ask, especially the ones where Reddit threads already rank in Google.
- Run each prompt several times per engine. AI answers change between runs, so a mention is a rate, not a yes or no. Our guide to tracking brand mentions in AI search shows how many runs it takes before a number means anything.
- Log three separate things. Is a Reddit thread cited, and does it contain your contribution? Is your brand named inside the answer, and in what tone? Is your own domain cited? These are different states, and Reddit can shape an answer without being credited in it.
- Date every snapshot and repeat. Given how fast the numbers moved in August, a capture is only true as of its date. Weekly runs give you a trend line that no vendor study can.
- Compare against your own baseline, recorded before you start. A sustained change in your rate is a signal; one week's move may be noise. A change in someone else's average tells you what happened to their prompts.
AI visibility tools can automate the repetition. geotoolbox's Domain Overview rolls citations from several AI engines into one view, including which pages get cited and which competitors show up in the answers, and its Community Insights lists the Reddit and forum threads those engines cite in your space. Both are included on Plus plans and up. Neither replaces your own prompt log or proves that a comment caused a change. To turn one engine's rate into a market-level view, see AI share of voice.
Not everything shows up in a citation log. Add a "how did you hear about us?" field to your signup or contact form, watch referrals from reddit.com in your analytics, and check whether branded search climbs in Google Search Console after a stretch of activity. None of these proves causation on its own, so read them together.
When Reddit SEO Is Not Worth It
Skip it, or shrink it, in a few situations. This is our judgment from the evidence above, not a measured rule.
Skip it when there is no live community for your topic: if searching your category queries turns up no active subreddit and no ranking threads, there is nothing to join. It also fails when nobody on your team can answer questions weekly without pitching, because the account will read as promotion and get filtered. It rarely pays when the only thing your account could contribute is "try our product," since a thread is not the place for that. And pull back when you need predictable returns, because the engines that cite Reddit can change how they use it without notice, as ChatGPT appeared to in August.
In those cases, put the effort into pages you own and mentions you can earn elsewhere. Our guide to getting cited by AI covers what tends to work across engines, and Reddit fits best as one input among several rather than the plan itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Reddit SEO mean?
Reddit SEO is using Reddit to improve your visibility in search and AI answers, by getting threads that mention you to rank in Google and be cited by AI systems. It works through honest participation in communities, not through links or volume.
Are Reddit links nofollow?
As far as we can tell, yes. Google recommends marking user-generated links with rel="ugc", and we saw nofollow ugc on a Reddit link post in an archived listing from October 2025 (live threads would not load for us to re-check). Treat a link from a Reddit comment as passing no link equity, so its value is the reader who clicks it.
Does ChatGPT still cite Reddit?
Sometimes. The latest figures cited here run through August 17 and show far less than before mid-August 2026; we have not established the level since. Promptwatch measured Reddit falling from 3.83% to 0.52% of ChatGPT Search citations between the July 18 to August 7 and August 14 to 17 windows. Check your own prompts rather than relying on that average.
How do I rank a Reddit post on Google?
Answer a question people already search, in a subreddit whose rules allow it, with an answer that stands alone. Commenting in a thread that already ranks is the lower-risk route, and following the subreddit's rules matters more than any keyword tactic.
Is SEO being replaced by AI?
No source here suggests it. AI answers add a second surface next to Google, and Reddit feeds both, so the work is to cover both rather than pick one. Our SEO and GEO budget split guide covers how to balance them.
Does a cited Reddit thread mean my comment was used?
Not necessarily. A citation shows that a thread was cited, not which comment shaped the answer. Log the exact thread URL and check whether your contribution is in it.
Reddit SEO Is a Channel You Rent
Reddit has shown up in search and AI answers, and its share has moved without warning. Answer real questions under the rules, keep a dated log of what each engine does with it, and keep the rest of your visibility plan on pages you own.
Before you spend time on Reddit, check the basics: geotoolbox's free AI readiness scan shows whether AI crawlers can reach your site at all. It checks reachability, not whether engines cite you, so pair it with your own prompt log.
