The best AI SEO tools are not one product. They are five jobs: suites, content optimizers, writers and agents, keyword research, and audits, and the right pick depends on which job costs you the most time. Many lists mix all five with AI visibility trackers, which makes it hard to compare like with like.
This guide sorts AI SEO tools by job, shows what each one costs where we could verify a price, and says which ones to skip. It also gives you a four-question test that separates an AI feature from an AI button, so you can judge the tools we did not cover.

Prices checked on each vendor's own pricing page on September 30, 2026. Semrush, SE Ranking, and Surfer served euros to us, so their figures are in euros; Ahrefs is shown in dollars through its currency switch. Your local price may differ, so confirm on each site.

How We Evaluated These Tools
We read each vendor's own pricing and documentation pages on September 30, 2026 and saved them, so every price and limit below comes from the vendor's page, not from a roundup. Where a number is a vendor's claim about results, we label it as theirs. Our only full product test is the Semrush one, run on three real sites in our Semrush review; we did not run the other tools on client sites.
We weighed four things when choosing the tools:
- Does the AI do work the older version of the tool could not?
- Can you see where each number or claim comes from?
- Is the price on the page, or behind a sales call?
- How much does it cost to leave?
This page covers AI-powered workflow tools: the software you use to research, write, optimize, and audit. If you want the strategy rather than the software, start with our guide to what AI SEO means. The trackers that measure whether AI engines cite you live in our GEO tools guide, and deeper content-optimizer comparisons live in best content optimization tools. We skipped link-building outreach tools, local SEO tools, and indexing-submission services, which solve different problems than the jobs covered here. We also did not review AI article writers such as Writesonic, Jasper, or Byword, or autonomous on-site agents such as Search Atlas's OTTO or Alli AI, so run the test below on any of them.
Real AI Feature or AI Button? A Four-Question Test
Most roundups list every tool that mentions AI. A practitioner in r/AISEOforBeginners put the suspicion plainly: most "AI SEO tools" feel like the same chatgpt wrapper. Some do. You can tell in one free trial.

1. Does it use data the plain tool lacked? A real feature reads your live crawl, your Search Console data, or a fresh SERP. An AI button rewrites text you already had.
2. Can you trace a number to its source? Ask it for one figure, such as a keyword's difficulty or a competitor's traffic, and find where it came from. If the tool cannot show the source, treat the number as a guess. One commenter called tracker output unverifiable, waste of time, which is the extreme version of the same problem.
3. Does the output move when the input does? Edit the page, then run the tool again. A real analysis shifts in response to your change. AI answers vary a little between runs, so judge the substance, not the phrasing.
4. Would the job still be possible without the AI layer? If you could do the same task in a spreadsheet in ten minutes, the AI saved typing, not work. That can still be worth paying for, but at a lower price.
A tool that passes all four is rare. One that passes three is usually worth a month.
All-in-One SEO Suites with AI Built in
A suite is the right first purchase when several jobs compete for your time and you need backlink or rank data. Keyword data, audits, rank tracking, and competitor research sit behind one login, and the AI layer mostly does one thing: lets an assistant query that data for you. For a head-to-head of the two biggest, see Semrush vs Ahrefs.
Semrush

Best for: research, audits, and AI search data in one login.
Semrush is now an Adobe company: Adobe announced the completed acquisition on April 28, 2026. Its pricing page groups plans under "SEO + AI Search" and sells paid cards named SEO, Starter, Pro+, and Advanced plus a free plan with one demo project. The paid cards list AI-search tracking, and Starter is the first with a stated quota: 50 prompts to track daily for one domain. In the euro view we saw, the SEO plan was €134.21 a month (€112.52 billed annually) and Starter €190.84 (€158.40); see the pricing page. The AI feature that matters most for workflow is MCP access, which the pricing page lists from Starter up and Semrush says is included in Semrush One and SEO Classic plans, with at least 50,000 MCP API units a month, so ChatGPT, Claude, and similar assistants can query its data directly. Its developer docs say the top tiers need an API-units package, and the pages do not fully agree on who gets the included units.
What works:
- MCP access from Starter up
- a free plan and a 7-day trial
What doesn't:
- each plan covers one user, with extra seats as add-ons
- its MCP page and developer docs disagree on which plans get the included API units
Our own three-site test of the product is in the Semrush review, and the Semrush alternatives guide covers who should look elsewhere.
Ahrefs

Best for: backlink and competitor data.
Ahrefs sells Starter, Lite, Standard, Advanced, and Enterprise plans; on monthly billing, Starter is $29 and Lite is $129. Its remote MCP server is available on paid plans starting from Lite, so the cheapest Starter tier cannot connect an assistant. The free tier is real: Ahrefs Free, the renamed Webmaster Tools, runs Site Audit and Site Explorer on sites you verify, with no card, plus a small monthly AI Content Helper allowance. The AI content tools (AI Content Helper and the Content Grader) sit in the Content Kit, a separate add-on from $99 a month.
What works:
- a free plan that audits your own verified sites
- MCP access from Lite up, which the cheaper Starter tier lacks
What doesn't:
- content scoring is a separate add-on from $99 a month
SE Ranking

Best for: a cheaper suite that still includes MCP.
SE Ranking offers Core and Growth plans. Core covers 10 projects and one manager seat, tracks 2k keywords and 100 AI prompts daily, audits 250k pages a month, and includes 25K API credits and MCP access; Growth raises each limit and the credits to 100K. Core costs €109 a month (€87.20 billed annually) in the euro view we saw; see the pricing page. The MCP server advertises 180+ tools. The 14-day trial needs no card, but its pricing page lists no free plan, and the fuller AI Search tracker is a paid add-on on top of the prompt tracking in each plan. For how it stacks up against the bigger suites, see our Ahrefs alternatives guide.
What works:
- MCP access on both standard plans
- base AI prompt tracking included in Core and Growth
What doesn't:
- no free plan on the pricing page, only the trial
AI Content and On-Page Tools
These tools score a draft against pages that already rank and tell you what to add. The AI part is now a writing agent and, increasingly, a prompt tracker bolted on. A high score measures similarity to ranking pages, not whether your page is better, so treat it as a checklist. Our content optimization tools guide compares seven of them, including the ones we skipped here.
Surfer

Best for: scoring a draft against the pages already ranking.
Surfer runs a plan ladder of Discovery, Standard, Pro, and Peace of Mind, plus a separate AI Search Analytics plan. Standard adds one-click content optimization and tracks 25 AI prompts weekly; Pro adds one-click internal linking, a cannibalization report, and MCP. In the euro view we saw on its pricing page, Discovery was €59 a month (€49 billed yearly) and Standard €119 (€99). Its top banner offers a free AI visibility audit, with the report sent by email.
What works:
- internal linking and cannibalization reports on Pro
- MCP on the Pro, Peace of Mind, and AI Search Analytics plans
What doesn't:
- Discovery has no prompt tracking, and the paid tiers track 25 to 100 prompts
- heavier AI tracking needs the separate AI Search Analytics plan or a higher tier
Clearscope

Best for: editorial teams that want one clean grader.
Clearscope keeps its price list short: $129 a month for Essentials and $399 for Business, with a 14-day free trial. Essentials includes 50 tracked queries, 50 pages, 20 topic explorations, and 20 drafts a month. Its AI layer is query tracking for ChatGPT and Gemini plus query fan-out awareness. Its pricing page lists monthly prices, with yearly plans available as custom invoices.
What works:
- 50 tracked queries on Essentials for ChatGPT and Gemini
- a 14-day trial
What doesn't:
- Essentials includes only 20 drafts and 20 topic explorations a month
- no public annual discount
Frase

Best for: budget briefs, with MCP on every plan.
Frase starts at $39 a month billed yearly ($49 monthly) on Starter, then $103 ($129) on Professional and $239 ($299) on Scale, with a 7-day trial and no card (see the pricing page). Starter covers one seat, one site, 10 articles, and 50 audit pages a month. Frase says its MCP server, CLI, and API are included on every plan, and its AI Agent drafts fixes for pages that slip, for you to approve.
What works:
- the lowest entry price among the optimizers with a verified dollar price
- MCP, CLI, and API on every plan
What doesn't:
- Starter is limited to 10 articles a month
- agent-written fixes still need your review
AI Writers, Agents, and Automation
This is the most crowded and least consistent category. Some entries are assistants you point at your own data, some are workflow builders, and some promise to run SEO for you. The more hands-off the tool, the more you should read what it publishes.
ChatGPT and Claude

Best for: drafting and analysis on data you supply.
On their own, a general assistant has no live keyword volumes or backlink data. Connected through MCP, it does. Semrush, Ahrefs, DataForSEO, and SE Ranking each document an official MCP server, and Google does not document one for Search Console as of September 30, 2026. We ran this article's keyword and SERP pulls through the DataForSEO and Ahrefs servers inside Claude Code. One r/AISEOforBeginners commenter described the same setup: connecting claude with GSC and ahrefs through MCP was the most useful thing they did. For the protocol itself, see what an MCP server is.
Claude Pro is $20 a month ($17 a month billed yearly), and Max starts at $100. ChatGPT runs Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, but the page served euros to us, so check OpenAI's ChatGPT pricing page for your region.
What works:
- live SEO data through official MCP servers
- flexible enough for briefs, clustering, schema, and meta drafts
What doesn't:
- it states wrong numbers with confidence, so every figure needs a source
- connecting the data sources is setup work you do yourself
AirOps

Best for: content operations at team scale.
AirOps describes its platform as combining agents, data, brand governance, and expertise to execute your AI search strategy. Its pricing page lists a Solo plan that includes 35,000 tasks for content production and single-user access; Pro has 100,000 tasks and unlimited seats; Enterprise is custom. The pricing page shows no dollar amounts, and its comparison table lists an AirOps MCP and MCP connectors.
What works:
- built for repeatable content workflows, not one-off prompts
- Pro adds unlimited seats
What doesn't:
- no public price, so budgeting needs a sales conversation
- Solo limits AI insights to ChatGPT
SEO.AI

Best for: hands-off publishing, with review switched on.
SEO.AI calls itself the AI SEO agent that creates ranking content, publishes it to your website, builds relevant backlinks, and keeps your visibility growing. A single site in one language costs $149 a month, and up to three sites or languages costs $299, with 25% off annual billing and prices excluding VAT. You can choose automatic publishing, saving as drafts, or review in the platform. Google's spam policies list excessive link exchanges as link spam, so treat the link claim with caution and keep publishing on drafts.
What works:
- drafts or review before anything goes live
- no binding period on monthly plans
What doesn't:
- its backlink method is marketed as "automatic link exchange," a vendor claim we did not test and the kind of scheme Google's spam policies warn about
- the second site or language moves you to the $299 plan
Keyword Research and Clustering
Suites cover keyword research, so buy a specialist only if clustering or weak-SERP hunting is your bottleneck. Keyword Insights leans on AI; LowFruits earns its place for its SERP data.
Keyword Insights

Best for: clustering keywords into briefs.
Keyword Insights costs $46 a month billed yearly ($58 monthly) for Basic, with 10,000 credits a month on monthly billing (120,000 a year on annual billing), and $79 ($99) for Professional with 20,000 credits a month (240,000 on annual billing) and three seats. Clustering costs 1 credit per keyword, a content brief 100 credits, and the AI Writing Agent 1,200 credits per article. A $1 trial runs 7 days, then drops you to pay as you go.
What works:
- cheap clustering, at 1 credit per keyword
- briefs built from the clusters
What doesn't:
- the AI Writing Agent burns through credits fast at 1,200 an article
LowFruits

Best for: finding weak SERPs you can outrank.
LowFruits says it bulk-analyzes SERPs to reveal weak spots and find the actual weak keywords. Standard costs $20.75 a month billed yearly ($29.90 monthly) for 3,000 credits and 100 tracked keywords; Premium is $62.45 ($79.90) for 10,000 credits and 500 tracked keywords. Pay-as-you-go packs start at $25 for 2,000 credits.
What works:
- a low entry price next to any suite
- pay-as-you-go packs if you only need a burst of research
What doesn't:
- subscription credits reset monthly and do not roll over
- the AI is light, so the value is the SERP data itself
Technical Audits and AI-Readiness
An audit tool decides whether a page can be crawled and understood at all. That matters twice now: search crawlers first, AI crawlers second. Google's own AI-visibility guidance says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, so a clean crawl is still the floor.
Screaming Frog

Best for: crawling a site with LLM prompts on your own key.
Screaming Frog crawls up to 500 URLs free, and a licence costs $279 a year (£199, €245); the AI features need the paid licence. Its user guide lists OpenAI, Gemini, Anthropic, and Ollama for running prompts on each URL during a crawl, and OpenAI, Gemini, and Ollama for embeddings that surface semantically similar or low-relevance pages. You supply the API key, and the guide notes an OpenAI key is separate from a ChatGPT subscription.
What works:
- a free tier that crawls 500 URLs
- AI prompts run per page against your own crawl data, on the paid licence
What doesn't:
- hosted-model API costs come from your provider on top of the licence, though a local Ollama model avoids them
- the licence lasts one year unless you renew
Geotoolbox

Best for: checking whether AI bots can reach your pages.
This one is ours, so read it as an interested party. The free AI Readiness checker scores any domain on five checks we treat as foundations without a sign-up: robots.txt validity, AI-crawler access, content signals, sitemap, and markdown negotiation. They are our own heuristics, and Google's guidance says you do not need special markup, AI text files, or Markdown to appear in Google Search, so read the markdown check as a test for other agents. The free AI Crawler Checker looks at which AI bots your robots.txt blocks. A blocked crawler can undo good content, which is why we built the check. Our paid tracker, from $99 a month, belongs in the GEO tools guide, not here.
What works:
- free, server-side, no sign-up
- scored the same way as our full agent-readiness scan
What doesn't:
- it checks five foundations, not a full site crawl like Screaming Frog
- the five checks are our own heuristics, not an industry standard
- reaching a page is not the same as being cited from it
Where the AI Visibility Trackers Are
Several tools above, including Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, and Surfer, now sell prompt tracking: they query AI engines and report whether your brand appears. Trackers have their own guide. The full comparison lives in our GEO tools guide, with a ranked shortlist in best AI visibility tools and the Google-specific side in our AI Overview tracker guide. Tracker numbers describe visibility across a sampled set of prompts, not your share of all real conversations, and answers vary by model, prompt, and time.
What a Specialist Stack Costs
Start with the free layer: Google Search Console, Ahrefs Free on your verified sites, and Screaming Frog's 500-URL crawl. Add a suite only when you need backlink data or rank tracking. Then add one paid specialist for your biggest bottleneck. Overlapping tools in one job waste money.
The table prices the specialist layer only, from the dollar figures we could verify. A suite, model API bills, and agency or enterprise needs come on top and vary too much to total from list prices.
| Stack | Tools | Monthly cost (derived) |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, annual billing | Claude Pro ($17) + LowFruits Standard ($20.75) | $37.75 |
| Solo, monthly billing | Claude Pro ($20) + LowFruits Standard ($29.90) | $49.90 |
| Small team, annual billing | Frase Professional ($103) + LowFruits Standard ($20.75) + Screaming Frog ($279 a year, $23.25 a month) + Claude Pro ($17) | $164.00 |
| Editorial team | Clearscope Business ($399) + LowFruits Premium ($62.45 annual) + Screaming Frog ($23.25) + Claude Max (from $100) | From $584.70 |
Totals are sums of the advertised per-month rates above, checked September 30, 2026; annual plans bill upfront. Claude plans and Screaming Frog licences cover one person each, Frase Professional includes 3 seats, and Clearscope lists unlimited users. Claude Max is priced from $100, and Clearscope lists monthly prices only.
A suite usually decides whether the total is reasonable. Our Semrush alternatives and Ahrefs alternatives guides compare suite prices by job, and the free SEO tools list covers the zero-dollar end.
AI SEO Tools That Rarely Move Rankings
Four kinds of AI SEO purchase disappoint often enough to name.
Bulk auto-publishing. Google says generative AI is useful for research and structure, but generating many pages without adding value may violate its scaled content abuse policy. In Ahrefs' study of 331k pages, pages that Ahrefs' AI detector classed as low or moderate AI content earned two to three times the organic impressions of pages classed as high or very high, in the subset with Search Console data. Ahrefs calls that a correlation, says it does not show automatic suppression, and notes that fully AI pages do rank in the top three. One marketer put it simply: fully automated content usually gets messy fast.
Chasing the optimizer score. A top score measures similarity to pages that already rank, not whether yours deserves to. Our content optimization guide covers how far a score predicts results.
Stacking tools before the basics. When an owner with near-zero traffic asked what they were missing, one reply was to stop adding tools and focus on the fundamentals. A tool cannot stand in for a plan.
Chatbot wrappers at suite prices. If a $99-a-month tool fails the four-question test above, a general assistant connected to your own data may do the same job for less, once you count data access and setup time. One poster complained that AI SEO tools charging $99 a month is getting out of hand.
How to Choose
- Name the job that costs you the most hours. Research, drafting, optimization, or audits. Buy for that job only.
- Start with free data. Search Console shows your real traffic, while third-party tools estimate it.
- Pick a suite only if you need backlinks or rank tracking. Otherwise a specialist is cheaper.
- Run the four-question test in the trial. If a tool fails two or more, skip it.
- Keep a human on anything that publishes.
The verdict on "which one first": a suite if you need breadth, Claude plus Search Console if you want to start for about $17 a month billed yearly, and Frase or Clearscope once drafts are your bottleneck. If you would rather hire than buy, compare AI SEO agencies.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best AI SEO tool?
There is no single best one. A suite such as Semrush, Ahrefs, or SE Ranking suits breadth, Surfer, Clearscope, or Frase suit on-page work, and Keyword Insights or LowFruits suit keyword research. Pick by where your hours go.
Can SEO be done by AI?
Parts of it can: research, briefs, clustering, and audits suit AI well. Publishing unreviewed pages is the risk, and the section above covers Google's scaled content abuse policy and the Ahrefs data. Keep a person on anything that goes live.
Can ChatGPT do SEO?
It can draft briefs, cluster keywords, and write meta descriptions, but it has no live volume or backlink data on its own. Connect it to SEO data through an MCP server, and check every number it gives you, because it states wrong figures with confidence.
Is SEO dead with AI, and what is AI SEO called now?
No. The names vary: GEO, AEO, and LLM SEO all describe optimizing for AI answers, and Google's guidance says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO. Our GEO vs SEO guide compares the terms, and is SEO dead covers the data.
What are the best free or cheap AI SEO tools for a small business?
Start with the free layer: Search Console, Ahrefs Free, Screaming Frog's 500-URL crawl (without the AI prompts), Semrush's free plan with one demo project, and our AI Readiness checker. One example starter stack is Claude Pro at $17 a month billed yearly plus LowFruits at $20.75, which comes to $37.75. Add Frase Starter at $39 when drafting becomes the bottleneck. Our best free SEO tools list covers more.
Do AI SEO tools track AI visibility?
Some do: Semrush (AI-search tracking on the paid cards, with a stated prompt quota from Starter), SE Ranking (base prompt tracking in each plan, plus a fuller add-on), Surfer, Clearscope for ChatGPT and Gemini queries, and Frase. Their numbers come from sampled prompts. The full comparison is in our GEO tools guide.
Start Free, Then Decide
Any tool here that aims to get you cited by AI assumes the crawlers an AI engine uses can fetch your pages. If a robots.txt rule blocks them, no optimizer score will fix that, although which blocks matter depends on the engine. Run the free AI Readiness checker on your domain before you pay for anything else, and use the AI Crawler Checker to see exactly which bots you block.
